Let’s face it, weddings are expensive no matter how economical you try to be. The wedding dress is perhaps the most important element (for the bride, at least) and you will undoubtedly go to great lengths in order to ensure you have the perfect dress.
While you may sometimes find a screaming deal that still makes you look like a million bucks, the dresses that make up our list were constructed for an unfathomable amount of money. The cost of some of the most expensive wedding dresses in the world will surely make your head spin.
This list of the most expensive wedding dresses is comprised of royalty, celebrities, and drool-worthy creations by designers worldwide. While it’s safe to say most of us can’t even begin to comprehend spending as much on a wedding dress as some of the people on our list have, we have no problem oohing and aahing over these beauties.
Starting with the most expensive wedding dress and working our way through the top ten, here you have it:
1. The Diamond Wedding Gown – 12 million
Holding down the number one spot, this diamond encrusted beaut is the most expensive wedding dress in the world. Laced with 150 carats of diamonds, this dress wasn’t even constructed for a bride-to-be. Put together for a 2006 bridal show at the Ritz-Carlton Marina del Ray, the dress was designed by Renee Strauss and Martin Katz provided the jewels, teaming up to create one of the best wedding dresses ever made.
2. Yumi Katsura White Gold Diamond Dress – 8.5 million
The second most expensive wedding dress was constructed my famed Japanese designer Yumi Katsura and is made of white gold. Features of this dress include an 8.8 carat green diamond, a rare 5 carat white gold diamond, over 1000 pearls, and zari embroidery hand-stitched onto the silk and satin dress.
While Katsura has designed dresses for more than 650,000 brides, none come close to this jaw-dropping dress. A diamond centerpiece is the last addition to this dress, which has yet to find a bride (maybe because of the price tag?) who is extravagant enough to wear it down the aisle.
3. Peacock Wedding Dress – 1.5 million
This 2009 Vera Wang creation is not your traditional white wedding dress, but it is perhaps one of the most impressive. Hand-crafted by 8 artisans who painstakingly stitched together 2,009 (a shout out to the year it was made) male peacock feathers, this dress stole the show at the Nanjin, China wedding expo. While this gown is sure to make PETA activists cringe, its royal appeal is undeniable.
4. Danasha Luxury Gown – 1.5 million
Tied for third with a price tag of 1.5 million, this dress will appeal to the modern bride looking for an elegant and clean gown. Don’t expect a never-ending train, tulle, or any frills with this gem, designer Danasha Luxury teamed with Jad Ghandour to create this perfectly fuss-free dress, but it’ll cost ya. Boasting 75 carats of hand-picked Antwerp, Belgium diamonds and 250 grams of 18-karat gold, this dress is certain to steal the show.
5. Kate Middleton’s Wedding Dress – $388,088
Prince Williams’ bride looked the part in this Sarah Burton (Alexander McQueen) stunner. Complete with a nearly nine-foot train, this dress was constructed with the most luxurious and delicate fabrics, including French Chantilly, English Cluny lace, and ivory and white satin gazar.
This dress took months to make and is not only one of the most expensive wedding dresses ever made, but one of the best gowns in recent years. Finished with hand-stitched lace applique, Kate’s dress was exactly what we expected from the royal family.
6. Mauro Adami Wedding Dress – $372,564
Constructed in 2008 by designed Mauro Adami, this luxurious wedding dress is made up of nearly 132 feet of platinum-colored fabric. Sewn with silk and platinum thread, the gown exudes femininity from the delicate embroidery to the gorgeous neckline.
7. Platinum Wedding Dress – $250,000
This Chinese creation stands out not only because of its bright red color, but because it is made of platinum. We’ve seen gowns made of gold and white gold, but platinum is a bit of a surprise. On display in China’s Anhui Province, the rich red blossoms and silver sparkle (that’s the platinum) make this one of the most expensive and unique on our list.
8. 9,999 Carat Gems Wedding Dress – $158,874
Another Chinese creation, this 2007 dress was on display at a Shangrao, Jiangxi Province store for window shoppers and store-goers alike, undoubtedly turning heads. With nearly 10,000 carats of gems provided by a Hong Kong-based jewelry designer, it’s easy to see why this marvel is one of the most expensive wedding dresses ever made.
9. ‘Bach Ngoc Xiem Y’ Wedding Dress – $117,000
Yet another Asian creation, this dress hails from Vietnam and is constructed of white silk and satin. Only for the seriously wealthy bride-to-be, this dress is embellished with 222 diamonds and 100 rubies. On display at the Ruby Plaza in Hanoi, anyone who sees the dress in person is bound to be impressed.
10. Imperial Pearl Syndicate Gown – $100,000
The last dress on our list of the most expensive wedding dresses ever was constructed in the 1950s by eight dressmakers over a span of two months. While it’s at the bottom of our list at $100,000 that is still more than most brides will ever spend on a dress and was widely expensive by 1950s standards. Weighing 27 pounds, this gown is made from silk and satin and is adorned with more than 100,000 pearls.
There are a handful of celebrity dresses that are said to be among the most expensive, but the price tag is kept under wraps. From Princess Diana’s 1981 head-turner, to the dress Grace Kelly wore in 1956, to Victoria Beckham’s strapless number, and Melania Knauss’ satin dress covered in pearls and crystal rhinestones, the dresses that didn’t even make our list are as impressive as any.
